As part of the programme, we had the pleasure of welcoming 11 bright and curious Form 3 students from Victoria Institution to Sunway XFarms HQ at FutureX, for a hands on, half day workshop on sustainable agriculture and urban farming. 

The day began with an introduction to XFarms, where students learned about the food security challenges Malaysia is currently facing and why growing your own food is becoming increasingly important. We also introduced them to various farming techniques including hydroponics, aquaponics, and how these innovations are reshaping agriculture in cities. 

After the talk, students toured our very first 3,000 sq. ft. outdoor greenhouse, where they got a behind the scenes look at how a commercial hydroponic farm operates. From understanding crop cycles to the infrastructure needed for a farm to function, they were given real insight into how farms are built, maintained, and scaled. 

In the second session, students applied what they learned through a group activity, where each team was tasked with designing a farm that could benefit a community of their choice. This exercise challenged them to think critically, creatively, and with empathy. We were thrilled to see their enthusiasm as they asked questions about farm costs, crop timelines, and system maintenance, proving just how engaged and forward thinking these young minds are. 

At just 15 years old, these students are already thinking about their future careers. We hope this workshop offered them both knowledge and inspiration to explore meaningful paths, whether in sustainability, agriculture, or beyond. Grow and Give: A Day of Action, Learning, and Impact with Tune Protect

On 17 May 2025, the spirit of sustainability came alive through a meaningful partnership between Tune Protect and Sunway XFarms. Together, we launched the inaugural session of the “Grow and Give” Programme, an initiative designed to give back to underserved communities while advocating for environmental sustainability. 

With Tune Protect’s CSR theme for 2025 centred on environmental impact, this collaboration brings together corporate volunteers, urban farming innovation, and heartfelt community engagement in a single impactful day. A total of 240 Tune Protect employees will participate in the programme across four sessions of 60 volunteers each. The first session on 17 May marked a strong and inspiring start, setting the tone for the sessions to follow. 

The day began at FutureX, Sunway XFarms’ urban innovation hub in the heart of the city. Volunteers were immersed in a morning of education and hands-on farming. Experts from Sunway XFarms opened the session with a talk on the importance of sustainable agriculture, highlighting how hydroponic farming methods differ from traditional systems and how they contribute to food security and environmental conservation. Participants learned how growing food closer to cities using efficient systems like hydroponics could help address pressing global challenges. 

Following the talk, volunteers were divided into three rotating groups to participate in various farming tasks. One group headed to XFarms’ outdoor greenhouse to harvest fresh vegetables that are ready for consumption. Another group took on the role of quality control, checking the harvested vegetables and packing them neatly into veggie bags for distribution. The third group focused on transplanting young seedlings into hydroponic netpots, preparing them for their journey to the community of Medan Jaya. These activities gave volunteers a tangible understanding of the food journey from seed to harvest. 

In the afternoon, the team traveled to Medan Jaya Apartment to carry out the second half of the day’s activities. Once again, volunteers were split into three groups, each taking on a unique role in contributing to the betterment of the community. One group took on the task of building a hydroponic farm on site. Equipped with tools like drills and glue, volunteers worked to assemble the system that would provide a continuous source of fresh produce to the residents of Medan Jaya. 

Meanwhile, the second group conducted a recycling drive. Volunteers went to every floor of the 15^th storey apartment block, collecting recyclable materials that residents had thoughtfully prepared in advance. Their collective effort paid off with an impressive 177 kilograms of waste collected, a clear testament to the commitment of both volunteers and residents toward a cleaner environment. The third group participated in a community cleaning drive, walking around the apartment compound to pick up litter and help provide a cleaner environment to the community. 

As the day drew to a close, the team gathered at the community hall to distribute 50 veggie bags filled with fresh, pesticide-free produce to B40 families living in the Medan Jaya community. This small but meaningful gesture brought joy and nourishment to households that may not always have access to healthy, fresh vegetables. 

The Grow and Give Programme is more than a day of volunteering. It is a powerful example of how purpose-driven companies like Tune Protect and changemakers like Sunway XFarms can come together to plant the seeds of long-term impact. Through education, sustainable action, and community partnership, this programme nurtures not only vegetables but also hope, empowerment, and a greener future.

Throughout 2025, Sunway XFarms has kept its promise to help communities in need battle malnutrition by donating Sunny Strong nutritious multigrain drink.

Malnutrition is a challenge many communities face, particularly for those who struggle with financial income and acquisition availability. At Sunway XFarms, we aim for nutritious food to be accessible to all; whether through our fresh & sustainably grown vegetables or healthy pantry foods.

Throughout our years of work, we have seen the prevalent gap in nutrition within communities, and in 2024, we finally found the best course of action for us to take as a farm in order to nourish those beyond the farm’s reach. We created Sunny Strong, with the goal of combatting malnourishment via food aid programmes and support to those in need. This multigrain drink was designed to offer an affordable yet nutritious option for a wide range of people, from children to senior citizens, even extending to those with dietary restrictions.

On 9th January 2025, Sunway XFarms donated Sunny Strong to several children’s homes in KL. These homes care for children aged 3 to 18, many of whom come from abusive, abandoned, or orphaned backgrounds. 

Although without families, these children deserve to be cared for, nourished, and loved, just like any other child. Through Sunny Strong, we help the caretakers of these children provide them with the daily dose of vitamins, minerals, and protein needed for their physical and mental development. This small gesture is part of our larger commitment to supporting children who face difficult circumstances, and we are grateful to be able to offer them a healthier, more nutritious alternative. 

Helping the New Life Foundation Beneficiaries get Daily Nutrition

On 23rd January 2025, we reached out to New Life Foundation (NLF), an organization dedicated to providing support for patients undergoing treatment for serious health conditions. When we introduced Sunny Strong, NLF immediately recognized its potential to help four of their existing beneficiaries who were having difficulty eating solid food due to critical conditions. 

Among them was Kak Iman, a cancer patient who has sensitive digestion on top of being unable to take solid foods. She was overjoyed to discover that Sunny Strong came in a berry flavour and couldn’t wait to try it. In Sunny Strong was she able to find comfort, knowing that she could still enjoy a simple drink that would nourish her body in a way that suited her health needs.

We were fortunate enough to visit a few beneficiaries personally in their homes, and the experience was deeply humbling. Hearing their experiences and struggles firsthand gave us much to think about on how we could further help them. To be able to offer Sunny Strong as an alternative to their daily diet was both a privilege and a responsibility we carry with pride.

In a world where health often takes a backseat to make day-to-day salaries, take care of families, household chores and other priorities, how can we make wellness easily accessible to all? 

On February 22, 2025, Sunway XFarms took a meaningful step towards bridging the gap between health and accessibility for the B40 community through our CSR Wellness Programme. Held at PPR Raya Permai, a low-cost housing area home to over 10,000 people, this initiative was designed to address the rising cases of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) in Malaysia, particularly among vulnerable communities. 

The B40 group, which makes up the lowest income bracket in Malaysia, is disproportionately affected by Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). With limited resources, many in these communities don’t have the means or knowledge that serves as a start to prioritize their health; often leading to serious conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease. The statistics are worrying– 41% of NCD cases in Malaysia are from the B40 group, making it clear that we need immediate action.

Our Wellness Programme is a driving force in helping participants kick off their wellness journey; by offering free health check-ups, an educational talk, and a fun, engaging exercise session. What might seem like a line-up of simple services goes further, and actually serves to create a sustainable foundation for health and wellness in a community that truly needs it. 

The CSR B40 Wellness Programme at a Glance 

The day welcomed 28 participants coming together, including adults and senior citizens. Along with SV Care Group, Believe Fitness and Sunway Multicare Pharmacy, Sunway XFarms’ comprehensive Wellness Programme to start the community’s health and wellness transformation journey began.

Upon arrival, participants were registered and ushered to SV Care Group’s health check-up booth, where blood pressure and blood glucose tests were conducted. This allowed us to identify those at risk for common NCDs like hypertension and diabetes. The results were sobering, over 50% of the attendees showed signs of high blood pressure or elevated blood sugar, highlighting the urgent need for further checkups, more accessible health screenings and immediate interventions. 

As knowledge is power, Believe Fitness conducted a health talk to help participants gain a deeper understanding of the necessity of wellness, and where to start. They covered important topics including what wellness encompasses, as well as the importance of physical activity, a balanced diet, and sufficient sleep. Through their sharing of simple yet powerful tips, the community was equipped with the insight needed to effectively make healthier choices in their daily lives. 

Believe Fitness instructors also took the stage with a fun and engaging exercise session. The trainers demonstrated straightforward and convenient exercises that could be done anywhere, encouraging participants of all fitness and stamina levels to join in. It was an important reminder that staying active doesn’t require a gym membership, nor a large field to run in; just a commitment to move- no matter how big or small- daily. 

Each participant left with a gift bag from Sunway Multicare Pharmacy and Sunway XFarms to help them continue on with their wellness journey. The bags included simple personal hygiene products and essential vitamins, along with Sunway XFarms’ own Sunny Strong nutritious multigrain drink that would help their families with children and elderly battle malnutrition. These small items serve to show that wellness doesn’t have to be extravagant or cumbersome; it can simply start with our everyday choices. 

The Results in the B40 Community: Real Change, One Step at a Time 

At the end of the day, the results speak for themselves: 

• 28 participants took part in the programme
• 50% of participants had high blood pressure or elevated blood sugar 
• 10 participants qualified for the PEKA B40 programme, giving them access to essential health screenings

While only a small scale, these numbers represent real people– families who now have a better chance at preventing or managing NCDs. Through the Wellness Programme, these individuals now have access to health resources that might have otherwise been out of reach.

The Sunway XFarms CSR Wellness Programme is just the beginning. We are committed to expanding this initiative and aiding even more communities in need. In the villages of Raub, Pahang, lives a community that struggles with some of the most basic challenges of modern life– access to fresh food, healthcare, and sustainable livelihoods. The Orang Asli, the indigenous people of Malaysia, have long faced socio-economic challenges that many others take for granted in their day-to-day lives. Sunway XFarms, in partnership with organizations such as Pertubuhan Komuniti Kasih Selangor (PKKS), CityFarm Malaysia and MyKasih, is working to change this reality. Through our “Solar for Growth” initiative, we aim to provide sustainable solutions to help light these communities up, one farm at a time. 

The Struggles of the Orang Asli Communities 

Kampung Ulu Ruai and Kampung Sungai Kellang, along with two other nearby villages, are home to approximately 800 Orang Asli residents. The lifestyle here is seemingly simple and peaceful, yet fraught with hardship. Adults rely on minimum daily wages from nearby plantations and factories, a financial situation that leaves little room for improvement or opportunity. Furthermore, the distance to the local market, which is half an hour away by motorcycle, presents a significant inconvenience for the women in the community who are often left without transportation, relying on their husbands to make the journey. 

The community relies on foraging in the jungle for basic foodstuffs like ferns, yam leaves, young jackfruit, and bamboo shoots. This speaks to their limited access to a regular, sustainable food supply. While the jungle provides, it cannot guarantee the steady, nutritious produce needed for these families to thrive. Fresh vegetables, which many of us take for granted, are a luxury that is often out of reach for these communities, as they are both expensive and difficult to obtain in their situation. 

The core of our company includes the problem-solving skills of our startup culture, our expertise from years of sustainable farming, and desire to positively impact lives through compassion and innovation. With this, Sunway XFarms presents the “Solar for Growth” programme, a proper solution that is both practical and sustainable.

Aiding the Orang Asli: “Solar for Growth” Programme 

On 5 February 2025, Sunway XFarms visited the villages of Kampung Ulu Ruai and Kampung Sungai Kellang to introduce the “Solar for Growth” project. This initiative combines solar power with hydroponic farming to provide a sustainable source of fresh produce to the community. Not only is this environmentally friendly, but also empowers the community with a new way to grow their own food, using simple systems that can be easily taught and maintained by local residents. 

Through the support of our partners– PKKS, CityFarm Malaysia and MyKasih, Sunway XFarms planted a farm in the village– a farm that not only grows fresh food, but also hope and opportunity. The solar-powered hydroponic farms are designed to be easy to learn and maintain; using minimal water that recycles itself through a circular watering system with the power generated from the solar panels. 

During our visit, we taught the local teachers how to use the systems, both to grow food and as a teaching tool at the school. With the planting of the solar-powered farm, children of these communities will not only learn about sustainable farming methods, but will also enjoy fresh, home-grown produce prepared by the community’s “house mothers”.

We want to acknowledge and thank the dedicated team from PKKS, who frequent the village every week to check on the locals as well as provide guidance and aid. Their continuous involvement ensures that every effort from donors is well implemented and maintained throughout time.

In addition to the farming system, we distributed Sunny Strong nutritious multigrain drinks to the children and teachers. This nourishing beverage, packed with 13 essential vitamins and minerals, calcium, and protein, provides a vital health boost to the community, addressing the nutrition deficiencies that many children face due to limited access to balanced meals.

Plant breeding has existed through centuries, including selective and cross-breeding to cultivate plants with desirable traits. Many of the foods we consume today are developed from plant breeding, from our corns to strawberries and more. However, making genetic changes to plants through traditional breeding takes a very long time, with specific traits or changes being extremely difficult to achieve. 

What are GMOs? 

GMO is used to describe foods that were created through genetic engineering. In simple terms, the genetic engineering process involves the following steps:

1. Identifying a desirable trait in an organism’s genetic information
2. Copying the information
3. Inserting the information into the DNA of another organism
4. Growing the new organism

For crops, GMO varieties were developed to make specific, desirable traits to crops in a much shorter time than it would take with traditional plant breeding. This can include the slowing of a crop’s ripening, pest resistance, nutritional enhancement, delayed rotting and more. Many genetically modified organisms contain genes from unrelated species, allowing the crop to have traits that would otherwise be difficult or impossible to develop by traditional breeding. 

The first breakthrough in the GMO study was in 1973 by biochemists Herbert Boyer and Standley Cohen, when they successfully inserted DNA from one bacterium into another. In fact, the first consumer GMO product that was approved by the FDA to be in the market was insulin for diabetic patients!

How does GMO technology work?

The technology that allows for precise genetic modification has been crucial for scientific advancement in the 21st century. It works by loading an enzyme with a segment of RNA (molecules similar to DNA), to which the enzyme uses as a template to find the corresponding segment of DNA in the organism that is being modified. The enzyme will then cut the DNA at that point, and the modification of the gene is done through the repair of the cut. Sections of the gene can be deleted, or new sections can be inserted, giving rise to novel traits. 

Risks of GMO Crops

While GMO crops were created to address common issues related to the fragility of crops and to bolster food security, it is not without risks. 

Genetic modifications can have unintended consequences that are difficult to predict, including those to our health. The Roundup Ready GMO crops made by the Bayer corporation are resistant to glyphosate, one of the most widely used herbicides in the world (also one of Bayer’s products). It was found that the Roundup Ready crops contained glyphosate residues at a higher concentration than their non-GMO equivalents. While glyphosate has not been proven to be harmful to humans or other animals, it is still not ideal to be consuming chemicals where it can be prevented.

GMO crops can also pose a danger to our environment via a risk called ‘outcrossing’. This happens when the pollen from GMO crops spreads to its wild relatives, passing it’s modified genes into the native habitat, where it then becomes out of the control of scientists. Since GMO crops are modified to be as robust and successful as possible, they are highly likely to outcompete its wild counterparts, leading to a loss of biodiversity.  

Additionally, GMO is a way for huge agricultural corporations to take further control of the market, forcing independent farmers to become reliant on their products. With the example of Bayer’s Roundup Ready crops, they are able to outperform other varieties of the same crops because they do not have to compete with weeds, which are killed by glyphosate. Farmer’s who used Roundup Ready crops would have no choice but to continue using the same seeds. In this way, Bayer has the monopoly on both the premier crops as well as the chemicals that allow the crops to be so successful. 

Do we use GMO seeds?

Here at Sunway XFarms, we do NOT use any GMO seeds or grow any GMO crops. We work with specialist seed suppliers who ensure the highest quality breeds that have been selected for without the use of genetic modification. Through our urban, hydroponic smart farms that are close to people, as well as our short farm-to-fork journey, we avoid the need to have crops resistant to rotting, pesticide use, drought, and more. Today we’re here to give you an idea or two as to why and how your company can consider incorporating sustainability-focused training; which is not only fun and interactive, but equips learners with the technical skills required to commit to sustainability goals together. 

Introducing Sunway XFarms’ brand new ESG series training course that is fully HRDF claimable. In this blog post, we will be covering our top 2 training courses that are well-loved by our clients.  

ESG Series 1: Sowing the Seed of Change – A Guide to Hydroponics Growing at Home 

During this 4-hour workshop, participants will learn the principles and benefits of sustainable agriculture, explore sustainable farming practices that promote environmental stewardship and resource efficiency, the importance of social and community aspects in sustainable farming and gain hands-on practical tips and techniques for growing their own food sustainably at home. 

Our favourite part of this workshop is the hands-on learning session– where each participant will get to unbox a mini farm kit and learn how to kickstart their hydroponics farming journey. Our learners love getting their hands wet, and the air is always filled with giggles and laughter as we get to see who has the better ‘green fingers’.  

ESG Series 2: Building a Green Circular Economy on the Road to Zero Waste  

During the 4-hour workshop, participants will learn about the benefits of adopting a zero-waste lifestyle by minimizing waste through sustainable actions such as recycling and composting. It highlights the environmental benefits of a zero-waste lifestyle and empowers participants with practical strategies for implementing these practices in daily life. 

Composting is a relatively unfamiliar ground for many, even though most people have heard of the word. In urban areas where many live in high-rise apartments, the tendency to dismiss the idea of composting due to the lack of open space, pest issues or foul smell is high. But fret not, that’s where we come in to break down this seemingly complex activity into really simple steps that’s perfect for any type of home.  

By now, L&D folks may be thinking that these topics sound amazing, but do they align with our corporate goals? 

We’re here to answer YES! 

Building a sustainability-driven culture: It’s important that sustainability is not just a buzz-word at the top management level, but understood and lived out at every level in your organisation, regardless of industry. What better way than to engage employees through practical and fun learning sessions? Seeing is believing, or in this context, harvesting is believing! The best way to preach sustainability is when we make it relevant and personal, lead by example, focus on benefits, and empower and educate.  

Cross-Departmental Collaboration: Our training emphasises on both team building and collaboration, as well as personal creativity and innovation. Everyone gets their own farm (or compost) kit to bring home after the training, of which they are encouraged to continue to care for their project until it’s ready for harvest.  

Environmental Impact: In the context of a green circular economy, learners can brainstorm on innovative ways to reduce waste at the office, which could result in a reduction of waste management and operating cost.  

Incorporating sustainability-related workshops like urban farming and composting into corporate culture is slowly becoming the new standard. Not only does it benefit the environment and community, it also enhances employee engagement, fosters innovation and demonstrates a company’s commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and achieving key Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) goals, all of which are becoming increasingly important to a business’ future successes.

Composting Food Waste

Did you know that food doesn’t decompose into the land when you throw it away? Food that ends up in landfills is often on top of other waste such as plastics and does not reach the ground; releasing carbon emissions as it is left to rot in the open. Composting is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint, practice easy zero waste at home, and turn unwanted kitchen scraps into garden gold. 

All you need is your kitchen scraps (green matter), and brown matter such as soil, dead leaves, newspaper, cardboard and more. 

Start off with a layer of brown matter in a bag or basket, then add in your kitchen scraps and cover with another layer of brown layer on top. If you have bokashi powder, you can speed up the process by sprinkling some over your compost. Keep layering & turn it once a week for quicker results. In 4-6 months your compost will be ready and you can add this organic fertilizer to your garden!

Growing your Own Food

95% of Malaysians do not eat the daily recommended amount of vegetables. Alarming as it is, we can attribute some reasons to easy access to unhealthy food, or simply a lack of understanding and appreciation for vegetables. How we at Sunway XFarms want to change this, is to teach people how to grow their own food– did you know that a single leafy green takes about 6 weeks to fully grow?

If you do not have a garden or balcony, do not think growing your own food is a distant dream! Introducing our Eco-friendly Mini Farm Kit. We’ve made it beginner and space-friendly to grow your very own food at home. Unlike traditional garden farming, this one is a lot more straightforward as you grow with just water! Okay, you do have to supply your crops with an appropriate amount of nutrients, but believe us when we say it is way easier and cleaner than soil growing! We’ve made sure to include a step-by-step guide as well– both in video format and pictures!

Microgreens Growing Kit

If you’d rather not wait 2 months, or are not feeling confident, try your hand at microgreens! Not only are they incredibly easy to grow, they are just as easy to eat, even for the pickiest of vegetable eaters. How much fresher can your food get when you’re harvesting it from your table to garnish onto your meal?

These sprout vegetables will grow in as little as a week and are actually 20x more nutritious than their mature counterparts; not to mention they are super luscious and a treat to simply admire. Just spread some seeds evenly onto damp peatmoss & let the magic happen!

Agrifood Apprentice Programme

Got green fingers & spare hours with the desire to learn? Why not try our Agrifood Apprentice Programme? Sustainable farming is more important than we realize, not only to improve local food security but also to reduce agriculture’s carbon footprint as a whole.

Our programme is a minimum commitment of 4 hours a week, and each day of the week consists of different tasks. You will be guided by field professionals, gain hands-on experiences and build potentially life-long bonds with other apprentices!
