The average age of Malaysia’s
farmers
is 54 years old!

With the stigma that agriculture is a step-back of a career, who will feed us when the current generation of farmers retire?

Sunway XFarms is committed to teaching youth about sustainable urban farming & equipping them with new hard skills that are uncommonly taught. We hope to combat the high youth unemployment rate and aging workforce at the same time.

Let’s change the future of our food together!

Since 2021, we have welcomed students & graduates from all sorts of backgrounds & studies. They take the time to volunteer at the farm while juggling with their other daily commitments, making small yet impactful changes in our food system.

Some have started their own edible gardens at home, some have taken to sharing their harvest with their communities, and some have set up their own urban farms back in their country / hometown!

FAQ

We accept anyone fully vaccinated & above the age of 18 years old. You are welcomed to join us as long as you can commit to a minimum of 4 hours a week.

Nope! Our apprentice programme is completely beginner-friendly and open to everyone of any background.

We use a slot-based system where you can book your weekly slots, so that it’s flexible for students who have classes & exams to juggle.

Each slot is about 2-3 hours, and varies daily depending on the task. Your hours are tallied at the end of each week.

While it is true that “the more hours you attend the more practice you get”; if you want to learn a little of everything, you will have to come for the different slot timings each week as the tasks for each slot are fixed (eg. harvesting & packing every Friday morning).

Yes! So long as you are able to commit 4 hours a week between Monday-Friday for the duration of 2 months, you can join us!

Unfortunately farm operations are closed during weekends and public holidays. The apprentice programme runs from Monday-Friday weekly.

We require apprentices to show up consistently at the farm weekly for the programme duration, and encourage you to be considerate of your peers’ time by not hogging the slots from them.

We also advise against going more than 4 hours in a day without break, as you should get some rest after physical labour.

Our agronomists will start shortlisting applicants after the deadline. You can expect a response within a week of the application deadline. If you do not see a response after a week, try checking your junk folder or search for mail from xfarms@sunway.com.my.

If you are still unable to find it and think you have been missed out, do reach out to us.

Senior apprentices are chosen by our agronomists at the end of the programme based on their performance. As a senior apprentice, you will be responsible to help lead the next batch of junior apprentices. You will be required to commit a minimum of 10 hours/week, and allowance will be provided for your time & help.

If you are interested in sustainable farming, growing your own food and composting but are unable to commit to 2 months, we do have workshops available.

For any other questions, feel free to contact us!
